Although the world is making great progress across all aspects of life, one particular area that greatly suffers and keeps worsening is income inequality. If proper measures are not taken to alleviate this problem, it will not only hamper the development of mankind but also have serious implications for the success of various nations.
An income divide is detrimental to global growth. Firstly, it causes great distress and unrest in the nations. Because of the wide gap between the rich and the poor, there is a feeling of hostility in the minds of the poor and this often translates to societal unrest.
This divide can really cause a never-ending social calamity whose effects can be so detrimental that they can affect generations to come. Secondly, income divide can hamper the development of the nation. For instance, India and China have been termed as developing nations since ages. One of the main reasons of this prolonged status as a “developing nation” is the widespread income inequality, and unless measures are taken to alleviate the income divide these nations will never attain the “developed nation” status.
Although nations cannot stop the rich from getting richer, what they can do is to devise successful ways of overcoming the problems of poverty. Education goes a long way in treating many social diseases and hence free or subsidized education to the poor can help alleviate poverty to a large extent. This education should go beyond pure academics and teach moral and humanitarian values to the poor, which will help ease out the feelings of hostility towards the rich. Government can also open schemes where the rich industrialists are allowed to adopt poverty-stricken areas. This way the rich can take up development work in the area and thus improve the condition of the poor and make them happy in their surroundings.
In conclusion, although the income inequality is rising it can be dealt with by creating programs which can help uplift the poor thus creating an overall positive environment.
