In every part of the world, it is now common for the wealthy to become wealthier and the poor to become poorer. Unfortunately, it increases inequality and criminal activities in the society. Ensuring equitable distribution of wealth is the only way to improve the situation.
The rich are becoming richer because we are living in the capitalist economy. Those who have the resources are buying up their competitors to amass more wealth. Governments now permit such acquisitions and there is no limit to the amount of money that a person can accumulate. Consequently, big companies are obliterating smaller rival companies. Large businesses are exploiting their workers by forcing them to work overtime for meagre salaries. Multinational companies are setting up factories in poor countries to exploit the cheap labour available there. The poor, by contrast, are struggling to make a living. When a person does not have even the basic necessities of life, they cannot invest in skills that will improve their lives. For example, most poor people lack even basic education. Since they are uneducated, they have little chance of finding a good job. They live in abject poverty and fail to provide the life changing education to their children. And the cycle continues. It is as if there is no way out.
The disparity in income causes deep unrest in the society. It is the number one cause of rising crime levels and civil unrest in all countries. Poor people despise the rich for being rich and rich people lack the empathy for the poor. This is a dangerous situation because it makes poor people take to crime.
There are some viable measures to improve the situation. The government should ensure that everyone has access to education regardless of their financial situation. It should ensure minimum wages to prevent the exploitation of labourers. It should offer collateral free loans. The government may also enact laws that prevent companies from acquiring wealth beyond a certain level. For example, it can consider breaking up large companies into smaller units owned by different people. In America, the government has already started discussing this possibility.
In conclusion, the rich are becoming richer because of their access to capital and other resources with which they can multiply their wealth. Unfortunately, this development leads to social unrest and crime. Making education universal and ensuring minimum wages are some ways the governments can counter this situation.
