Band 9 IELTS essay sample
The rich and the famous command greater respect in the modern society. In fact, values such as kindness, generosity and honesty are becoming irrelevant. Therefore, I agree with the argument that worldly riches and social standing have become the new measures of a person’s worth. One of the reasons for this development is that the media encourages young people to follow the wrong role models. Also it has become difficult for ethical people to succeed in this immoral world.
Youngsters these days choose the wrong people as their idols. They are misguided by the notion that a person should be wealthy and famous to be successful. They read about models, singers and actors having millions of followers on social media and want to be like them. They do not care whether the person they admire has character or integrity. They are blinded by the hype surrounding these people. Since they are always gazing at the ‘stars’, they do not get an opportunity to learn from the real heroes. Not surprisingly, a study conducted by a well-known university in 2016 revealed that 75% of girls aged between 14 and 18 years would rather be like Khloe Kardashian than Madam Curie or Mother Teresa.
However, this does not mean that people with principles have gone extinct. They are still around but they cannot find their way to a position of power or success. More often than not we observe that the offices of power are held by rich and influential people who are morally corrupt. Youngsters who follow them on social media and elsewhere get the impression that the honest cannot succeed in this world. Consequently, they give up on their ideology and choose to tread the easy path that would take them to success.
In conclusion, values have certainly become irrelevant in the twenty-first century. This could be due to various factors such as the influence of the media which constantly raves about the rich and the famous. Another factor that contributes to the demise of age-old values is the fact that honest and ethical people are struggling to succeed in this materialistic world.

Very high level of English, I was impressed.
A question though: I’m not sure the word ‘youngsters’ is appropriate for part 2. also, it is used twice.
please correct me if i’m wrong
Don’t worry too much about repetition. What is the harm in using the same word twice as long as it does not hurt the readability of the essay?

THE HIGH BEARING OF SOCIAL STATUS AND WORLDLY POSSESSIONS ARE NOW BEING USED AS A MEASURE OF A PERSON’S VALUE, WHILE THE TRADITIONAL FACTORS LIKE HONOUR, KINDNESS AND TRUST ARE OFTEN OVERLOOKED BY PEOPLE. I BELIEVE THAT THIS IS TRUE TO A CERTAIN DEGREE.
FIRSTLY, OLD-FASHIONED VALUES CAN ONLY BE NOTICED AFTER ONE LEARNS ABOUT ONE ANOTHER AT A MORE PERSONAL LEVEL. HOWEVER, WE LIVE IN A FAST-PACED WORLD SO IT IS HARD FOR SOME PEOPLE TO ACKNOWLEDGE THESE VALUES AS THEY COULD NOT FIND THE TIME TO GET TO KNOW THE PERSON BETTER. HENCE, THEY HAVE OPTED TO JUDGE A PERSON BASED ON THEIR SOCIAL STATUS AND MATERIAL POSSESSIONS INSTEAD. FOR INSTANCE, IT IS EASIER FOR SOMEONE TO HAVE A MORE RESPECTABLE PERSPECTIVE ONTO THOSE WHO HAVE GOOD EDUCATION AND THOSE WHO COMES FROM A WEALTHY FAMILY THAN PEOPLE WHO DO NOT ACQUIRE THESE QUALITIES. THIS DOUBLE STANDARD IS QUITE OBVIOUS IN THE SOCIETY NOWADAYS AS WE CAN SEE HOW POORLY PEOPLE WITH LOW-PAYING JOBS ARE TREATED.
ON THE OTHER HAND, I BELIEVE THAT ALTHOUGH THIS PHENOMENON IS HAPPENING, IT IS MORE IMPORTANT TO FORM YOUR OPINION OF SOMEONE AFTER YOU HAVE TAKEN THE LIBERTY TO GET TO KNOW THE PERSON. WE OFTEN HEAR THE PHRASE ‘DO NOT JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER’, HOWEVER, WE SELDOM ADHERE TO IT. AS WE DO NOT KNOW HOW A PERSON IS ON THE INSIDE, IT WOULD BE RECKLESS TO JUST LEARN THEIR PHYSICAL QUALITIES. SOMEONE WITH GOOD QUALITIES ON THE INSIDE ARE MORE TRUSTWORTHY AND ARE BETTER AT BEING GREAT FRIENDS AND WORKERS.
IN CONCLUSION, THERE IS NO DOUBT THAT PEOPLE’S REAL QUALITIES SUCH AS HONOUR, KINDNESS AND TRUST ARE BEING OVERLOOKED AND THEY ARE INSTEAD FREQUENTLY JUDGED BASED ON THEIR SOCIAL STATUS AND POSSEsSION OF MATERIALS. THEREFORE, IT IS IMPORTANT FOR INDIVIDUALS TO REFRAIN THEMSELVES FROM JUDGING TOO QUICKLY OF SOMEONE.
This seems band 7 to me. Why all caps?
Hello!! Can I have my essay graded? Thank you so much
At the present time, the great bulk of people consider social status and material goods to be the measurement of a person’s value. I believe that this is a shallow appraisal led by the increasing wealth share of the most civilized countries in the world.
Some may state that someone’s possessions are a mirror of their effort in life. However, this is rarely the case. Most people make their fortune out of their heritage. Although these people often show great managing abilities investing their money, I believe they were just born lucky. Indeed, when you are given the opportunity to have a good education and grow up in a wealthy environment, it is more likely that you will excel in life. On the other hand, people with a different background, do not have the same possibility of flourishing.
In addition, a good job and a big load of possessions do not often match with a great personality. Sometimes the richest people are also the most avid. On the contrary, the poorest people seem to be the most empathic and, thus, the most prone to give, even if they do not hold much. For example, according to my experience, Japanese monks will be more than pleased to welcome you in their temples and share their food with you. They recognize that their time on Earth is limited and that they need to spend it giving love and working on their mind.
To conclude, it is common belief that material goods and money are the meaning of our stay on Earth, while the wisest of us understand that the ultimate heritage that one should leave after death is no more than abstract.
