Band 7.5 IELTS essay sample

English has become the most popular language in the world along with the development of tourism and some people believe that this language will eventually dominate the world. The positive and negative aspects brought about by this phenomenon will be discussed in this essay.

On the one hand, having just one official language across the globe is beneficial in many ways.

Business entities can enhance their efficiency. Corporations will fortify qualifications pertaining to English and they can hire their new employees equipped with the fluency in English. As all employees are prepared to work in the partnership with foreign companies, anyone, if he or she has capability, can contribute to the collaboration with foreign companies. Many of the Korean companies have been preparing for the era, where English is the only official language. They have hired employees who are fluent in English and have sent some of their employees abroad for language development.

On the other hand, some unfavourable aspects can be anticipated. First, English can be a standard to decide life quality. Students including primary, secondary and tertiary school have to spend a considerable amount of money and time for learning English English education if they have their own mother tongue. It means that they cannot achieve the language skills related to English without investing money. Children who hail from affluent family have more educational opportunities to develop their language skills and this leads to better and more employment options. Those who come from low income families will not secure as many vocational options as wealthy ones. Additionally, its impact can last for the rest of their time. Second, people might lose pride in their own language.

Language plays a crucial role in shaping people’s cultural identities. While people are exposed to the foreign language, English, they might develop preferences toward English and hostility toward their own language. Accordingly, they might prefer foreign cultures based on the idea that foreign culture is superior to their traditional one.

In conclusion, having just one language will improve the overall business productivity; however, it will trigger loss of employment opportunities for people who are not fluent in English. Also, it may make people lose respect for their own language and culture.
