Excessive usage of vehicles has led to serious environmental problems such as global warming and ozone layer depletion. Some people opine that to solve this problem, the price of fuel must be hiked. I disagree with this view.

To begin with, as people are dependent on transportation these days, no matter what the price of fuel is, vehicles will still be used. People are likely to still be using the fuel-based vehicles despite the fuel being so costly. So, instead of hiking the fuel prices, the government should be proactively working towards afforestation. By planting more and more trees, the pollutants emitted by the vehicles can be absorbed to a great extent. For example, the Amazon forest cover is depleting rapidly, which actually contributes to 15.5% of the world’s total oxygen level. Therefore, hiking the fuel price is not a feasible solution to deal with this global issue and other solutions must be brought forward.

In addition, affluent people are unlikely to be affected by this hike because of the high-paying jobs and wealthy financial status. On the other hand, the general public will be severely affected by this decision as despite the increase, they will still have to use the expensive fuel to fulfill their needs. Hence, the governing authorities must promote clean fuel vehicles and electronic transportation modes rather than increasing the price of fuel. For instance, eActiva was launched in India in 2014 to encourage people to use it as an eco-friendly alternative to petrol-based scooters. Hence, inventing eco-friendly vehicles must be the priority instead of boosting the fuel price.

To conclude, although increasing the fuel price might seem to be a possible solution to control the various global environmental issues, it is not pragmatic at all. Rather, the focus should be more on reducing deforestation and encouraging people to plant more trees. Also, environment-friendly vehicles must be promoted by giving subsidies.
