Speaking practice questions with answers

Examiner: Can you describe your day at work?

Candidate: Well, I work from 9 to 5. I am usually at my workplace by 8.50. The first thing that I do after arriving at work is to check my emails. If there are urgent emails, I reply right away. Afterwards, I go about other tasks. Sometimes I have to attend meetings and sometimes I have to travel. I work in the insurance industry and I am primarily responsible for handling claims. My job requires me to deal with a lot of people.

Examiner: Do you take photos?

Candidate: I take photos when I am traveling or when I see something really interesting. My smartphone has a nice camera and that is what I use to click photos. I don’t normally carry a camera with me.

Examiner: Would you like to learn how to take better photos?

Candidate: Yes, I am interested in photography, especially wildlife photography. I would like to do a crash course when time permits.

Part 2

Describe a house or an apartment where you would like to live. Please say:

  • What should the house look like?
  • Where should it be situated?
  • Why would you like to live in this house?

Sample response

I would really like to live in a sea facing apartment in Mumbai. Right now I live in a small apartment that does not offer any impressive views. Actually, when I open the windows, I can only see the building next to our building. I have always been fascinated by the sea. My uncle has a sea facing apartment in Chennai. When I was younger, I used to spend my vacation there with his family. I guess that is how I became infatuated with the sea. Apart from this requirement, the apartment should have basic amenities. I would like it to have a simple and elegant design. I would also like to have a private gym. I have small children, so the apartment should ideally be in a housing society that has a garden and a playground.  If I had the money, I would buy a sea facing apartment in Colaba or Marine Drive. I like both places; however, the property prices in these areas are way beyond my reach. So, honestly, I don’t expect this dream to a reality anytime soon.
