Band 8 IELTS essay sample

It is seen that a certain portion of the population desires to live by themselves. This phenomenon can be attributed to changes in the values that individuals and societies pursue. It is hard to say that it is a positive or a negative trend.

The reasons why people prefer to live by themselves lie in changes in individual and societal values. First, people can pursue a life focused on individual gratification. People in the past cared about the family and the community; however, people in the present prioritize their own life over others and desire to actualize their wishes without any disturbance or distraction from others. Some people opt to live alone. In addition to this, societies have begun to embrace and respect differences in individuals. People have come to terms with many types of families including single-person household.

This development / trend has both advantageous and disadvantageous aspects. First, this emerging residence type can be beneficial to individuals to lead their own life in accordance with their interests. If they want to develop computer skills, then they can immerse themselves in studying programming by investing most of / much of their time and energy into it. There will be no distraction from others. Also, they can make their own routine, which is preferable to them. However, the life focused on individual inclinations exclusively can alienate themselves from others including family members. They do not have enough family gathering. It might have an adverse impact on them because the bonds between them and family can be weakened.

In conclusion, living alone has become part of the mainstream in some societies. This is because we are now living in an individualistic society. However, it is hard to decide if it is positive or negative because this trend respects individual preference / priorities, but, at the same time, it can create distance between family members.
