It is often debated whether people should plan for the future or simply live in the moment. I believe that both statements have their grounds and I will explain my views in this essay.

To begin with, some people argue that humans should enjoy the present moment and forget about the past and future. I suggest that this view holds true for those who are suffering from terminal illness. For palliative care patients, thinking about the future could be too agonizing and devastating. Therapists often propose that they should experience and focus on the present to reduce their pain. For instance, mindfulness is a form of therapy which guides patients to concentrate on the here and now. Being thankful to the family and friends and feeling blessed for the days that they have lived help the patients forget about the fears of death.

However, contemplating about the future enables people to establish a clearer goal and helps them with personal development. First, when we think about the future, we are more likely to set up goals and have a clearer vision of what we want ourselves to be. Not only will the goals motivate us, but the obstacles that we foresee will also make us less likely to surrender in the face of adversities. In other words, planning enables us to to improve our chances of success in life. Second, deciding what to do in the future is a means to better manage our time and resources. To illustrate, it is almost mandatory for corporations to write proposals when conducting multi-sector projects. They are required to state the timeline and capital clearly to enhance efficient use of resources.

To conclude, I believe both views have their merits. While people who are at their terminal stage of life are advised to experience the present moment to alleviate agony, others should think about and plan for their future to live a more fruitful life.
