These days the majority of young people are spending their leisure time in shopping. Growing consumerism and ease of shopping are the main reasons for this. However, in my opinion, this is a negative development that cannot be encouraged.

Exposure to social media and new age advertising are the main reasons that encourage people to go on a shopping spree whenever they have time. Search engines and social websites track people’s online behaviour and show them targeted advertising. As a result, people are lured into buying even those things they do not need. The influence of celebrities is another reason that encourages people to pick up this habit. Thanks to the advancement and easily accessible technology, anyone can be a celebrity online and can endorse anything.

Unfortunately, shopping addiction cannot be encouraged. I firmly believe that they should pursue a fruitful activity like exercising rather than going on a shopping spree whenever they get some free time. Youngsters are full of energy and have so much potential. They should rather focus on their career or devote some time to the society or maybe even volunteer for a noble cause. By engaging in such activities they can improve their career prospects and make the world a better place to in. Shopping addiction, on the other hand, not only costs them their time but it may also leave a hole in their wallets.

In conclusion, excessive exposure to advertising is the main reason that prompts young people to do too much shopping. However, this trend cannot be encouraged because it leads to wasteful expenditure.

In today’s materialistic society, for the majority of youngsters, purchasing commodities becomes a famous hobby. In my opinion, the advertisement industry and celebrities, are the main culprits for this unhealthy trend and I think that people can better utilize that time on other activities, which I will address further in this essay.

A the outset, the advertisements displayed on every platform, such as newspaper, social media and television, allure the young ones to purchase the trending things, even sans the need for that item in life. For example, most of the people in India try to upgrade them with a newly launched smartphone just to update themselves with the latest technological advancements. Another contributing factor is celebrities as almost every juvenile has his role model from these famous people. Thus, they try to imitate the outfits of their role models and update their wardrobe by spending large chunks of money on expensive clothing.

In my view, it is more advantageous to pursue some other hobbies, namely reading novels and cooking which not only provides a productive output but also they need not spend a hefty amount of money to engage into them. Besides this youngsters would reap more benefit by involving them into some sort of physical activities to uplift their fitness level and at the same time, these type of activities would work as a stress buster for them to feel rejuvenated.

To conclude, youngsters are easily fascinated by various factors which encourage them to shop more; however, it is highly beneficial for young people to involve themselves in productive hobbies and physical activities, to utilise their leisure time appropriately.
