Nowadays many people complain that they have difficulties getting enough sleep. What problems can lack of sleep cause? What can be done about lack of sleep?

Band 7 IELTS essay sample

In recent times, people sleep less due to major changes in their lifestyle. While this may lead to several health problems and low productivity at work, it can be resolved by actively participating in sports and regulating work hours.

Sleeping for reduced hours can cause health issues and low productivity at work and if continued for longer time period, this might even cause physical and mental problems. If a person is unable to sleep for 6 hours at night, they might be unwell because of sleepiness / drowsiness and headache the next day. As a result, people are unable to concentrate on work and this might lead to low overall performance. To illustrate, according to a survey conducted by the ‘New York Times’, 70% of people show low performance at work on Monday due to sleep deprivation after partying over the weekend.

Sleep problems can be prevented by exercising every day and following strict office timings. It is considered that active participation in sports or regular exercise after work can make a person feel tired and thus help them sleep well at night. Additionally, people feel immensely active at work if they have slept well the previous night and can complete the work as per schedule without having to work overtime. For instance, joining any sports club and practicing your favorite sports daily after work not only increases the quality of sleep but also reduces stress.

To conclude, reduced sleeping hours can cause health issues and low performance at work. However, active participation in sports and proper work life balance will help people to sleep better.
