Band 7 IELTS essay sample

Social networking sites like Facebook and Instagram have gained tremendous popularity in recent years among the youth. Many people think that these sites have a huge adverse effect on both individuals and community. I completely agree with this argument/view.

The intrinsic reason that makes me feel so is that people are getting addicted to these sites. It has been noted that even during office hours, staff members do not hesitate to browse these online sites. Besides this, social media has become a hub for petty crimes. To illustrate, cases of cyber bullying, hacking and stalking are alarmingly high.

Moreover, face-to-face interaction between people has reduced which eventually leads to a polarised society. Thus, children and adults are living isolated lives despite staying in the same home and this brings them closer to psychiatric problems. Concomitantly, these networking sites have deteriorating effect on people’s health. Myriads of health issues like depression, obesity, headache, and poor vision are associated with it. On the other hand, these are some people who found the sites as a remarkable invention in history of innovation. The sites have given a common platform where one can express oneself and communicate to anyone in the world with just one click.

The aforementioned discussion boils down to the fact that although social media has given us the freedom to communicate anytime and from anywhere, these networking sites are negatively affecting the lives of many individuals. This pessimistic surge is here to stay if these sites are not used judiciously.

When new towns are planned, it is important to build more public parks or sports facilities than shopping centers for people to spend their free time. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Over the last few decades, it has become more common for town planners to design cities with more leisure facilities related to sports and green public areas instead of malls. From my point of view, I agree with this tendency and this essay will explore the reasons and draw some conclusions.

One of the main reasons because I agree with building more sports facilities and parks in a city is that it could improve the general public health. This is largely due to the fact that the more physical exercise people do, the stronger they are, resulting in being more capable of facing and cope with multiple diseases. For instance in Toronto there are ten parks for each one hundred thousand inhabitants, being the city with more sport facilities in north america. Because of this, the city reduce obesity in its citizens by 30% in the last 20 years.

In addition, having more sports facilities than shopping centers improve the finance of the government in the long-term. Many people suggest that bricks-and-mortar stores generate more money since they pay a small fortune in fees and taxes. However, the money that the government spends on public health every month is higher than what they receive, therefore, reducing the number of sick people allow the government to invest more in other areas which lead to inhabitants to have a higher quality of life. A study conducted at Harvard University in 2019 found that if the government of the USA had constructed ten more parks instead of one mall, the could saved 1% of its gross domestic product in the public health budget.

To sum up, I agree with the idea of building more parks and sports amenities since not only is it a golden opportunity for people to increase their quality of life by staying healthier but also, it is a win-win business for the government as they can save an enormous amount of money that is not necessary to spend in public health.
