Band 7.5 IELTS essay sample
People have various opinions about exceptionally high income only available to a few people. While some insist that the government should intervene to distribute income more evenly, others believe that this phenomenon is beneficial to the development of a nation. I opine that the government should facilitate an environment where economic activities are freely conducted without any limitation, but, at the same time, they should aid people lacking basic needs with welfare schemes.
On the one hand, some claim that the government has to have the control over income levels. Capping the remuneration/salaries can alleviate the magnitude of economic inequality to a certain degree in the first place. However, when if it is implemented for a long-term period, it can discourage people’s morale to attain their goal and they end up working in a passive manner. As a result, the advancement of the society will be hindered and the economic status will stay in a plateau.
On the other hand, others consider the high salaries of a few people as instrumental to the growth of a nation. The primary reason for this is that this can stimulate the rest of the people in a positive way. Normal people strive to work harder to reach their individual goal and in the pursuit of the goal, the nation will flourish economically. However, in an exceedingly polarized economy, people are more likely to give up pursuing their goal out of relative deprivation. Thus, the government should launch more welfare programs in that society to fulfill people’s needs and this measure is a lot more beneficial than imposing a limit on upper salaries.
To conclude, capping the amount of income people can earn will certainly reduce economic inequality. However, it will also discourage people from working harder and ultimately prove detrimental to the economy. Hence, in my opinion, rather than limiting the salaries of high net worth individuals, the government should launch welfare schemes for the poor.
