IELTS Writing Tips

There are two tasks in the IELTS writing module. Task 1 is to write a letter or a report of at least 150 words. Task 2 is to write an essay of at least 250 words. Here are some tips to improve your score in the writing test.

Clearly divide paragraphs in your essay. You can highlight or circle key words. Avoid the repetition of ideas. While writing the essay, stick to the given topic. Don’t digress. A lot of test takers commit that mistake.

Be careful with timing. The IELTS writing test takes about an hour. Don’t spend more than 20 minutes on the first writing task. If you do, you will have to rush through task 2 which carries more points.

Avoid informal language in your writing. Avoid contractions.

Discuss only one idea in each paragraph. Make sure that ideas flow between the paragraphs neatly. You may not get time to count the number of words in your letter or essay. So learn to recognize how long 150 or 250 words look in your handwriting.

Don’t spend the whole of 60 minutes in writing. Spare a few minutes for re-reading and correcting your essays and letters.
