IELTS Success Tips

There are many techniques to improve your IELTS band score.  You can enroll in an IELTS coaching program. Or you can prepare on your own. Note that even if you attend an IELTS coaching class, you will need to work on your own.

How much preparation is necessary to do well on the IELTS?

Well, it depends on your level of English. If you have a good command over English grammar and vocabulary, you will not require any extensive preparation. All that you need to do is to familiarize yourself with the kind of questions that could be asked on the test. If your English skills are average, you will require at least two months of preparation.

Improve Your Vocabulary

While preparing for the test, keep learning new words. Pay special attention to phrasal verbs and idioms. A good knowledge of these idiomatic expressions is extremely essential to do well on the Listening section. The conversations that you hear during the listening test could be idiomatic. If you fail to figure out the meaning of these expressions, your chances of scoring well are slim.

You may also come across many unfamiliar words in the passages given for reading. Here again your chances of scoring well depends upon your ability to figure out their meaning. Therefore it is essential that you learn as many complex words as possible.

Connecting words are equally important. English has a large number of them. Although it is impossible to learn all of these words, you must know the most important ones. A good knowledge of connecting words is essential to write a good essay or report. These words are useful to achieve the effect of unbroken continuity of thought. If rightly used, they will connect the sentences up and make the paragraph a well-knit, organic whole.

While preparing for the test, don’t lose your confidence. Keep telling yourself that you will earn a high band score. Set a target score and work with the objective of achieving that score.

Many questions on the IELTS test can repeat. Therefore familiarize yourself with the questions asked on the IELTS exams recently held. Practice under the conditions you are most likely to encounter during the actual exam.

On the Exam Day

Sleep well on the night before the exam day. It will help you stay attentive throughout the test. Good level of concentration is extremely important during the listening test.

Think and plan before you start writing your essay or report. Many students commit the mistake of starting the essay with whatever ideas that flash through their mind. This isn’t recommended. As for the speaking section, well, consider it as a friendly chat.
