Band 8 IELTS essay sample

Some people believe that it is hard for both privileged and underprivileged to gain admission / entrance to higher institutes of learning. In my opinion, some challenges affect both the rich and the poor equally while some apply only to poor people.

On the one hand, several factors determine whether or not students can gain access to university.  The main one is getting the required score for admission. For instance, most schools require every prospective student irrespective of their social status seeking admission to sit for an assessment exam to test their knowledge and based on their performance, they are either granted or denied admission. In this case, not only the rich but also the poor must write and pass their exam before they gain admission.

On the other hand, some difficulties affect only the less privileged. Expensive tuition fee is one of them. Indeed, it is impossible to study in a university without paying the school fees. While the rich people in the society are unaffected by this problem as they can easily afford it, it is very challenging for those who can barely eat three square meals in a day. Even if, for instance, they are offered admission based on merit, they still have to worry about the money for school fees, textbooks and accommodation.

In conclusion, in order to study at university / college, students often have to face some hurdles. While the wealthy only worry about how to get the required grades for their intended course, the low-income earners worry about both the score and the school fee.
